Teen Driver Ed

How It Works

Step 1:  Zoom Classroom

The teen program starts with a 3-week or 4-week class during the school year. During the summer and holiday breaks, 1-week options are available. Download class calendars. Calendars include course FAQ, tuition schedules, and DPS recommendations.

After passing the permit test, you will receive a certificate to take to the DPS to get your learner's permit. Schedule your DPS appointment at public.txdpsscheduler.com/ (Select Service "Apply for First time Texas DL/Permit"). DFW locations typically book their appointments 2-3 months in advance. DPS offices in smaller cities typically have sooner availability. We recommend checking Waxahachie, Stephenville, Tolar, Bryan, Madisonville, and Houston. Most DPS offices make a limited number of same-day appointments available online at the beginning of their day.

VERIFICATION OF ENROLLMENT (VOE) proves that students have at least 90% attendance. During the school year, this document is valid for 30 days. If requested during the last week of school, it is valid until the first day of school in the fall. During the summer, teens can substitute with a diploma or final report card showing 90% attendance. (The DPS may reject report cards with less than 90% attendance.) Once school starts, only a VOE is accepted.

Step 2:  In-Car Lessons

You must have a Texas DPS-Issued Learner's Permit with a photo to start driving lessons. Your permit expires on your 18th birthday. You must renew your permit at the DPS to continue driving lessons. Visit public.txdpsscheduler.com/ to schedule an appointment and select "Change Replace or Renew."

Driving lessons are completed in a driving school vehicle with a passenger-side brake and a certified instructor. You must bring your permit to every lesson (photos of your permit are not accepted). In addition to lessons with our school, you must complete 30 hours of driving practice with a Texas-licensed driver age 21 or older.

To schedule/cancel your driving lessons, log in to your student account on our website. Lessons must be canceled at least 24 hours in advance to avoid a late cancellation fee.

Step 3:  Road Testing

You can take your road test once you are 16 and have had your learner's permit for at least six months. Your 6-month date is listed as an F-Restriction on the back of your permit. You must bring the following documents:

  • Printed Impact Texas Teen Driver Certificate (Valid for 90 days)
  • Completed 30-hour driving log signed by a Texas-licensed adult driver
  • Verification of Enrollment (VOE) from your high school registrar or attendance clerk (Valid for 30 days)
  • DE-964 For Driver's License Only Form showing completion of teen driver education. A+ Academy Driving School will provide this form if you complete classroom and behind-the-wheel with us. Teens who completed the driving with us but classroom with another school must provide a DE-964 showing the completion of classroom hours. Teens who completed their entire program by parent-taught or with another school will provide their DE-964 form.
  • Parent/guardian must sign off on documents on test day.  If parent-taught, the registered adult instructor must be present.
